The letters in the serial numbers do in fact ID the gauge & aprox date..AND There are also markings on the barrel as previously stated,for ID purposes also.The Pre-fix letter showed up in the 70's and gives a general time span for the aprox.date.(Check Barrel for more info)"L" is early to mid 70s. M islater 70s, maybe very early 80s and N early to mid 80s.
